Spa & Wellness Joinery

Spa and wellness spaces are where guests slow down. They are quieter, more controlled environments, but they still work hard – supporting treatments, changing, bathing, resting and socialising across the day. Joinery is central to how these spaces feel and function: lockers, vanities, treatment room storage, refreshment points, poolside elements and more.

At Make Bespoke Studio we design and deliver spa and wellness joinery for hotels, members’ clubs and residential developments – from compact urban spas to generous resort wellness floors – working closely with interior designers, architects, operators and spa consultants.

The role of joinery in spa and wellness experiences

In spa and wellness environments, joinery shapes much of the guest’s tactile experience – from the feel of locker doors and vanity edges to how towels, products and refreshments are presented. It also quietly manages storage, services and staff flows behind the scenes.

·        signalling calm and order as guests move from public areas into quieter zones

·        supporting clear journeys from reception to changing, treatment, heat experiences and relaxation

·        keeping towels, products and equipment close to hand without cluttering the space

·        handling moisture, temperature and cleaning regimes without compromising appearance

We think of spa and wellness joinery as a continuous layer running through reception, changing, treatment, pool and lounge spaces, connecting decisions made on Reception Desks & Lobby Joinery, Amenity & Members’ Club Joinery, Tea Points & Breakout Kitchenettes and Fitted Storage & Alcove Units.

Types of spa and wellness spaces

Every spa is different, but many share a familiar family of spaces. We adapt the joinery language to each while keeping a coherent thread throughout.

·        Changing areas and locker rooms – zones where guests arrive, undress and prepare for treatments or pool use, combining lockers, benches, vanities and towel stations.

·        Treatment rooms and suites – rooms for massages, facials and rituals, where joinery supports therapists with storage, basins, warmers and discreet equipment.

·        Thermal suites and wet journeys – saunas, steam rooms and experience showers, often supported by towel stations, product niches and cold rooms just outside the hot zones.

·        Pool decks and relaxation lounges – spaces for swimming and resting, with joinery for towels, robes, storage, screens and sometimes light F&B service.

·        Fitness and studio support – joinery for yoga studios, gyms and movement rooms – accommodating mats, props, AV, water and towels – drawing on Fitted Storage & Alcove Units and Home Offices & Study Joinery where focused work-style storage is needed.

·        Spa reception and retail – welcome desks, consultation areas and retail displays, often developed in close dialogue with Reception Desks & Lobby Joinery and Amenity & Members’ Club Joinery.

Key joinery elements within spa and wellness spaces

We organise spa and wellness joinery into clear families of elements so that spaces feel coherent and calm, even when they work very hard operationally.

·        Lockers, benches and changing joinery – locker banks, integrated benches, robe hooks and small personal storage, developed using principles from Wardrobes & Dressing Rooms and Fitted Storage & Alcove Units but adapted for wet and semi-wet environments.

·        Vanities, washstands and grooming stations – vanity units, mirrors and shelving for hairdryers, products and towels – often shared between changing rooms and circulation areas.

·        Treatment room consoles and storage – consoles behind or alongside treatment beds, accommodating products, warmers, trolleys and sometimes concealed sinks, with layouts tuned to therapist workflows.

·        Towel, robe and linen stores – open and closed storage for fresh and used linens, placed strategically along the guest journey and coordinated with back-of-house routes, Locker Rooms & Back-of-House Joinery where larger volumes are handled.

·        Refreshment points and spa bars – tea, infused water and light snack stations in relaxation lounges and pool areas, developed in dialogue with Tea Points & Breakout Kitchenettes, Home Bars & Back Bars and Hospitality Bars & Back Counters.

·        Screens, panelling and quiet thresholds – full-height and partial-height joinery elements that modulate privacy, views and acoustics, drawing on Wall Panelling & Architectural Joinery and Internal Doors & Screens.

Wet areas, materials and detailing

Spa and wellness joinery has to perform in demanding conditions – moisture, temperature variation, products and intensive cleaning. We pay close attention to substrates, finishes and detailing so that pieces age well.

We develop palettes using our Materials library – including moisture-resistant substrates, specialist laminates, lacquers, stones, composites and metals – and align them with stylistic directions on Joinery Styles.

·        selecting appropriate substrates and edge details for wet and semi-wet zones

·        detailing plinths, upstands and junctions so that water is managed rather than allowed to sit

·        choosing hardware and mechanisms that cope with humidity and regular cleaning products

·        considering touch-points – handles, rails, bench edges – so they feel comfortable on bare skin

Operations, housekeeping and back-of-house

Behind the sense of calm in a spa is a busy operational layer – linens in and out, products restocked, treatment rooms turned over. We design joinery to support this rhythm without breaking the atmosphere for guests.

·        planning towel and robe flows from central laundry or BOH stores to local cupboards and open displays

·        providing discreet waste and used-linen bins within joinery, with easy access for staff

·        allowing for staff-only storage and prep areas close to treatment rooms and pools

·        coordinating back-of-house doors and access panels with visible panelling so they almost disappear

Much of this storage thinking draws on Fitted Storage & Alcove Units and Locker Rooms & Back-of-House Joinery, adapted for spa-specific operations.

Integration with services and specialist equipment

Spa and wellness joinery has to accommodate plumbing, drainage, ventilation, heating, AV and specialist equipment – often within tight footprints. We integrate these early so that guests see only a calm, resolved surface.

·        coordinating basins, taps and drainage in vanities and treatment consoles with MEP teams

·        planning for ventilation grilles, access panels and control gear within panelling and benching

·        designing housings for AV, lighting control and sound systems in relaxation and fitness spaces

·        allowing for access to plant and controls serving saunas, steam rooms and thermal experiences

These integrations sit within our broader Bespoke Joinery technical package and are coordinated with MEP, AV and specialist spa consultants.

Lighting, mood and sensory experience

Lighting and joinery work closely together in spa environments. We design joinery to hold lighting in ways that support calm, legible and adaptable spaces.

·        integrating soft lighting to niches, shelves and plinths to give depth without glare

·        using concealed linear lighting to define quiet datums and guide movement in low light

·        supporting layered scenes – brighter for cleaning and setup, softer and warmer for guest use

·        coordinating lighting positions with mirrors, pools and artwork so reflections feel intentional

Working with architecture and adjacencies

Spa and wellness areas often sit slightly apart from the main circulation, but they still need to connect clearly to lobbies, amenity floors and guestrooms. We use joinery to manage these thresholds.

·        aligning joinery heights and datums with adjacent panelling and doors so transitions feel deliberate

·        using full-height joinery and screens to soften views into changing or relaxation areas from more public routes

·        tying spa reception and lounges back to Reception Desks & Lobby Joinery and Amenity & Members’ Club Joinery, and connecting treatment corridors and guest relaxation spaces to Hotel Guestroom Joinery Packages where appropriate.

Our process for spa and wellness joinery

Our approach to spa and wellness joinery follows the same clear stages as our wider

Bespoke Joinery work, with additional emphasis on moisture, comfort and operational flows.

1. Brief & operational review We begin by understanding guest profiles, spa concept, treatment menu, operating hours and staffing – as well as any brand standards or consultant inputs.

2. Plans, adjacencies and services review We review plans, sections, MEP and specialist spa information – or visit site – to understand adjacencies, services routes and views.

3. Layout options and zoning We develop joinery-led layout options, testing the placement of lockers, vanities, treatment consoles, towel stations and refreshment points along the guest journey.

4. Detailed design & coordination We produce detailed joinery drawings showing construction, internal layouts, substrates, finishes, services integration and junctions with walls, floors and ceilings.

5. Materials, samples and mock-ups We prepare focused samples and, where helpful, support mock-ups of key areas, aligning them with adjacent scopes on Types of Joinery and ensuring consistency with wider Hospitality Joinery and Amenity & Members’ Club Joinery packages.

6. Production & installation Spa and wellness joinery is manufactured through our network of workshops and installed in coordination with main contractors, MEP and spa specialists, with careful setting out and on-site adjustments to suit real conditions.

Connecting spa and wellness into the wider scheme

Spa and wellness spaces are part of a wider story – from first arrival at reception to guestrooms, amenity floors and outdoor terraces.

We make sure decisions taken here align with adjacent scopes such as Reception Desks & Lobby Joinery, Hotel Guestroom Joinery Packages, Amenity & Members’ Club Joinery, Tea Points & Breakout Kitchenettes, Home Bars & Back Bars, Hospitality Bars & Back Counters and wider Hospitality Joinery packages. All of this is structured through Types of Joinery and the stylistic language captured on Joinery Styles.
