Home Offices & Study Joinery

Well-designed workspaces have become essential rather than optional. A fitted study or home office needs to balance focus, storage, technology and comfort – without overwhelming the room it sits in. At Make Bespoke Studio we design and deliver bespoke home office and study joinery for high-end homes, apartments, hotels and amenity spaces, working closely with interior designers and architects.

A workspace that fits the room

Every workspace sits somewhere on a spectrum – from a fully dedicated study to a discreet desk in a bedroom or living space. Our role is to design joinery that supports real work while respecting the wider character of the room.

·        understanding how often the space will be used, by whom and for what kind of work

·        deciding whether the room should read as a study first, or as a living / sleeping space that can become a workspace when needed

·        planning how screens, paperwork, printers and cabling can disappear when the day is finished

·        keeping ergonomics, lighting and storage in balance rather than letting any single element dominate

Stylistically, we take cues from Joinery Styles and material palettes developed within Materials, so that workspaces feel like a natural extension of the overall scheme rather than an add-on.

Home offices in private residences

In private homes and apartments, workspaces have to sit comfortably alongside everyday life. We design joinery that makes it easy to focus during the day – and just as easy to switch off in the evening.

·        Dedicated studies and libraries – Complete study rooms that combine fitted desks, storage walls and bookshelves, often overlapping with broader library schemes.

·        Desks within living rooms or open-plan spaces – Joinery that allows a desk to sit naturally alongside media walls, shelving and storage, with the ability to close away equipment when not in use.

·        Bedroom and dressing-room workspaces – Smaller desks integrated into wardrobes, dressing areas or bay windows, designed so that work can be packed away and the room still feels restful.

·        Under-stair and alcove work nooks – Compact workstations in leftover spaces, carefully detailed so they feel intentional rather than improvised.

These schemes often borrow from or tie into scopes such as Libraries & Bookcase Joinery, Media Walls & TV Joinery, Wardrobes & Dressing Rooms and Fitted Storage & Alcove Units, ensuring that work functions are fully integrated into the wider Residential Joinery package.

Workspaces in hospitality and amenity projects

In hospitality projects, workspaces are often woven into lounges, lobbies and amenity floors – places where guests might check emails, hold informal meetings or work for a few hours between engagements.

·        Hotel business corners and guest workstations – Compact desks in lobbies, corridors or dedicated business areas, with robust materials and carefully planned power, lighting and privacy.

·        Amenity floors and co-working areas – Long shared tables, focus booths and storage walls that support flexible work within a broader amenity or club environment.

·        Members’ clubs and hybrid spaces – Study-like environments with library walls, integrated desks and quiet corners that feel equally suited to reading, working or meeting.

These elements typically sit within larger Hospitality Joinery and Amenity & Members’ Club Joinery scopes, and may sit alongside Reception Desks & Lobby Joinery, Tea Points & Breakout Kitchenettes and Hospitality Bars & Back Counters, sharing a consistent material and detailing language.

Ergonomics, technology and cable management

A workspace that looks beautiful but is uncomfortable or messy will not be used for long. We plan ergonomics and technology integration from the outset.

·        desk heights, clearances and legroom tailored to task chairs and occasional seating alike

·        monitor positions, keyboard space and sightlines considered alongside any secondary screens or TVs

·        concealed cable routes, power access points and charging drawers, coordinated with electrical and AV teams

·        printer, router and peripheral storage that keeps noise and clutter out of sight while remaining accessible

These considerations are folded into our wider Bespoke Joinery process and coordinated with other services so that everything works together quietly in the background.

Storage, filing and organisation

Every client stores different things – paperwork, samples, reference books, tech, personal items. We plan storage around those realities rather than defaulting to generic drawers and cupboards.

·        a mix of open shelving for books and objects, and closed storage for files and equipment

·        deep drawers, pull-outs or lateral filing where paper storage is still important

·        pinboards, whiteboards or fabric-wrapped panels integrated into joinery for planning and display

·        sample storage for designers – shallow drawers, pigeonholes and shelves sized for finishes and materials

We use the framework of Types of Joinery to ensure storage choices in studies relate sensibly to adjacent areas – from Utility, Laundry & Boot Room Joinery and Bespoke Kitchens & Pantries to nearby Wardrobes & Dressing Rooms.

Materials, styles and atmosphere

The character of a workspace can range from quietly minimal to richly layered and club-like. We tune materials and profiles accordingly, always in dialogue with the wider scheme.

We select finishes from our Materials library – timbers, veneers, lacquers, stones and metals – and align them with stylistic directions captured on Joinery Styles.

·        lighter timbers and soft paints for calm, daylit studies that double as guest rooms or family spaces

·        richer veneers, deeper colours and softer lighting for more cocooning, library-like workspaces

·        slender profiles and minimal hardware where a contemporary, technical feel is desired

·        warmer details – handles, inlays, leather tops – where tactility and longevity are key

Acoustics and privacy

Acoustics are often overlooked in small workspaces. We consider how sound travels in and out of the room, particularly where studies sit off living spaces or amenity areas.

·        use of softer materials – rugs, curtains, fabric-wrapped pinboards – in combination with joinery to dampen sound

·        positioning of desks and storage to buffer noisy adjoining spaces

·        integration with Internal Doors & Screens and Wall Panelling & Architectural Joinery strategies to give workspaces appropriate separation.

Our process for study joinery

Our approach to home office and study joinery follows the same clear stages as our wider

Bespoke Joinery work, with an emphasis on use, comfort and integration with technology.

1. Brief & working patterns We start by understanding who will use the space, how often, what needs to be stored and what kind of atmosphere they work best in.

2. Room review and opportunities We study plans, sections and site photos – or visit in person – to understand light, views, existing features and where joinery can add most value.

3. Layout options and elevations We develop layout options and elevations, balancing desk size, storage, circulation and the way the room will look when work is packed away.

4. Technical design & coordination We produce detailed joinery drawings, coordinating with electrical, data and AV teams so that services are fully integrated.

5. Materials and samples We propose finishes and hardware, preparing sample sets that sit alongside other elements of the scheme and relate to adjacent scopes on Types of Joinery.

6. Production & installation Study joinery is manufactured through our network of workshops and installed in coordination with contractors and other trades, with careful attention to setting out, fixings and final adjustments.

Connecting into the wider scheme

Workspace joinery is rarely the only fitted element in a project. We make sure decisions taken here feel consistent with the rest of the scheme.

Details and materials from home offices and studies are carried into related scopes such as Libraries & Bookcase Joinery, Media Walls & TV Joinery, Reception Desks & Lobby Joinery, Amenity & Members’ Club Joinery and wider Residential Joinery or Hospitality Joinery, using the structures on Types of Joinery and the stylistic language on Joinery Styles to keep everything aligned.

Next steps

If you are developing a project that includes a home office, study or amenity workspace, share your drawings, photographs and any early thoughts with us.

We can respond with layout ideas, indicative joinery scopes and how these workspaces could sit alongside Libraries & Bookcase Joinery, Media Walls & TV Joinery, Fitted Storage & Alcove Units and wider Residential Joinery or Hospitality Joinery packages. From there we move into detailed design, sampling and delivery in line with your programme.
