Reception Desks & Lobby Joinery

Arrival is where a project’s story becomes real. The way reception desks, concierge stations, luggage stores and lobby joinery are handled sets expectations for everything that follows – from guestrooms to amenity spaces. At Make Bespoke Studio we design and deliver bespoke reception desks and lobby joinery for hotels, members’ clubs, residential developments and workplaces.

The role of reception and lobby joinery

Reception and lobby joinery does far more than provide a check-in surface. It sets the tone for welcome, choreographs movement and houses a surprising amount of equipment and storage behind a calm elevation.

·        anchoring the arrival sequence and giving guests a clear focal point

·        quietly organising circulation between doors, lifts, lounges and back-of-house areas

·        supporting staff with practical, ergonomic workstations and secure storage

·        expressing brand character through proportion, materials and detailing

We treat reception desks, concierge points and lobby joinery as part of a coordinated family of elements, tied back into Wall Panelling & Architectural Joinery, Internal Doors & Screens and adjacent Amenity & Members’ Club Joinery so that arrival feels effortless rather than improvised.

Reception desks and concierge points

Reception desks need to balance presence with approachability. We tune their scale, height and detailing to the room they sit in, and to the way teams work day-to-day.

·        Primary reception desks – Main check-in desks sized for peak flows, with clear guest approaches, DDA-compliant sections and well-organised back-of-house zones.

·        Concierge and host desks – Smaller points for concierge, host or porter functions, often set away from the main counter but using the same language.

·        Podium and satellite desks – Light-touch desks or podiums used for check-in at busy periods or events, often coordinated with wider lobby joinery so they can ‘park’ neatly when not in use.

Front elevations are often developed in tandem with Wall Panelling & Architectural Joinery and Internal Doors & Screens, ensuring that desk forms sit comfortably within the architectural rhythm.

Back-of-house, storage and security

Behind every calm reception elevation is a dense layer of storage, technology and security. We plan this side of the desk just as carefully as the guest side.

·        lockable storage for keys, paperwork, tech and guest items, zoned clearly for different functions

·        logical organisation of drawers, cupboards and shelves so that staff can work efficiently during busy check-in and check-out periods

·        integrated pigeonholes, mail slots and parcel storage where required

·        secure housings for safes, cash drawers and sensitive equipment

Where back-of-house requirements expand into adjacent spaces, we coordinate with Locker Rooms & Back-of-House Joinery and, for more hospitality-focused operations, Hospitality Joinery more broadly.

Integration with technology and services

Reception desks concentrate power, data and security systems – from PMS and telephony to CCTV and access control. We integrate these so that guests see only a calm, organised surface.

·        planning cable routes, floor boxes and containment to avoid ad-hoc trunking and visible wiring

·        allowing for monitors, telephones, payment terminals and scanners without cluttering the guest edge of the desk

·        designing discreet housings for printers, routers and hubs with appropriate ventilation and access

·        integrating card encoders, key safes and CCTV monitors in ways that meet security needs without dominating the workspace

These integrations are developed as part of our Bespoke Joinery process and coordinated with project IT, security and MEP consultants.

Lobby joinery elements

Beyond the desk itself, lobby joinery shapes how guests and members use the space – where they sit, wait, read, work or simply pass through.

·        Luggage stores and bell stations – joinery that accommodates luggage neatly – from open trolleys to enclosed stores – often near reception or lift cores.

·        Library walls and display shelving – shelving and display units for books, objects and retail, drawing on approaches from Libraries & Bookcase Joinery and Fitted Storage & Alcove Units.

·        Coffee points and bars in lobbies – lobby coffee stations and bars that share language with nearby Tea Points & Breakout Kitchenettes and Hospitality Bars & Back Counters, keeping services coherent across public areas.

These elements often sit within wider Amenity & Members’ Club Joinery packages, ensuring that lobbies, lounges and club spaces feel part of one joined-up story.

Wayfinding, flow and accessibility

Reception and lobby joinery has a direct impact on how legible a building feels. We use joinery to support intuitive wayfinding and inclusive access.

·        positioning reception desks and concierge points so that guests understand where to go within a few seconds of entering

·        keeping clear routes to lifts, stairs and key destinations, avoiding unnecessary crossing of flows

·        building in DDA-compliant sections to desks with appropriate knee space, counter heights and lighting

·        using joinery to frame views and guide movement, often in tandem with panelling and screen elements

Materials, tactility and brand expression

Reception desks and lobby joinery are among the most touched and closely observed elements in a project. Materials need to work hard, but they also carry a large part of the brand story.

We build palettes from our Materials library – timbers, veneers, lacquers, stones, composites, metals and specialist finishes – and align them with stylistic cues captured on Joinery Styles.

·        selecting worktop and front materials that stand up to luggage, bags and repeated cleaning

·        detailing edges, corners and foot areas so that high-wear zones age gracefully

·        balancing solid elements with lighter, more open shelving or metalwork where appropriate

·        considering how materials read from different distances – from across the lobby to at the point of check-in

Lighting and atmosphere

Lighting has a huge effect on how welcoming reception feels – and how easy it is for staff to work. We design joinery to support both atmosphere and clarity.

·        integrating soft lighting to desk fronts or plinths to give a gentle glow and clear presence at night

·        providing task lighting to work surfaces without creating glare for guests across the counter

·        using integrated lighting within shelving and display to bring depth to lobby walls

·        ensuring switching and dimming allow the lobby to shift from day to evening modes gracefully

Working with architecture and sightlines

Lobbies are often double-height, glazed on multiple sides or visible from upper levels. We consider reception and lobby joinery from all of these vantage points.

·        aligning reception desk heights, canopies and overhead features with surrounding panelling and ceiling lines

·        designing desk ends and returns carefully, as these are frequently seen on approach from lifts and entrances

·        coordinating with Wall Panelling & Architectural Joinery and Internal Doors & Screens so that openings, views and lobby joinery feel part of one composition.

Where lobbies connect to spa, pool or wellness areas, we reference details from Spa & Wellness Joinery to keep the transition between public and calmer zones feeling natural.

Our process for reception desks and lobby joinery

Our approach to reception and lobby joinery follows the same clear stages as our wider

Bespoke Joinery work, with particular emphasis on operations, visibility and integration with services and brand.

1. Brief & operational review We begin by understanding arrival flows, staffing models, security needs, brand positioning and any existing standards.

2. Room, services and sightline review We review plans, sections, MEP information and visualisations – or visit site – to understand structure, services routes, adjacencies and key views.

3. Layout options and elevations We develop layout options for desks and lobby joinery, testing desk positions, guest approaches, storage and relationships to lifts, doors and seating.

4. Technical design & coordination We produce detailed joinery drawings showing construction, internal layouts, services integration, fixings and junctions with panelling, floors and ceilings.

5. Materials and samples We prepare focused sample sets for fronts, worktops, trims and lighting, aligning them with adjacent scopes on Types of Joinery and ensuring consistency with wider Hospitality Joinery and Amenity & Members’ Club Joinery packages.

6. Production & installation Reception desks and lobby joinery are manufactured through our network of workshops and installed in coordination with main contractors, IT and services teams, with careful setting out and on-site adjustments to suit real conditions.

Connecting arrival into the wider scheme

Reception and lobby joinery is the first part of a much wider joinery story – connecting guests to guestrooms, clubs, bars, amenity spaces and spa areas.

We make sure decisions taken here align with adjacent scopes such as Hotel Guestroom Joinery Packages, Tea Points & Breakout Kitchenettes, Home Bars & Back Bars, Hospitality Bars & Back Counters, Spa & Wellness Joinery, Amenity & Members’ Club Joinery and wider Hospitality Joinery packages. All of this is structured through Types of Joinery and the stylistic language captured on Joinery Styles.
