45 park Lane
London
Our partners were commissioned by designer Thierry W Despont to create lighting as art in the reception of hotel 45 Park Lane in Mayfair, London. Working in partnership with architects at Paul Davis and Partners, a London-based practice with an international portfolio and known for its integration of contemporary architecture within historic environments, we overcame the significant challenges that producing this 5m high, 1.5 tonne art installation entailed.
The light comprises approximately 50 opal acrylic sections of varying sizes with polished stainless steel rods and panels reflecting and complementing the diffused light emanating from the almost 30 cold cathode lamps within. The finished design was adapted from the original requirement for glass panels, as it soon became clear that they would not be malleable enough to work with and would also make this weighty piece even heavier. The spectacular lighting structure was assembled and installed in situ over two weeks by our team and is a striking work of art to which the eyes of visitors to the hotel are inevitably drawn.
