Headboards & Bedroom Feature Joinery

Bedrooms work best when they feel both restful and quietly considered. The way the bed, headboard and surrounding joinery are handled sets the tone – from calm, minimal compositions to richer, layered schemes. At Make Bespoke Studio we design and deliver bespoke headboards and bedroom feature joinery for high-end homes, apartments and hospitality projects.

How headboards shape the bedroom experience

The headboard wall is usually the first thing you see when you enter a bedroom – and the last thing a guest sees before they fall asleep. It frames the bed, sets the mood and often contains lighting, power and storage that quietly support daily routines.

·        anchoring the bed within the room and establishing clear symmetry or deliberate asymmetry

·        integrating lighting, switches and power so that evenings and mornings feel effortless

·        providing a comfortable surface to sit up against, whether in timber, upholstery or a mix of materials

·        creating a visual link between the bed, wardrobes, bedside tables and any seating or desks in the room

Headboards and bedroom features in private homes

In private homes and apartments, headboards and bedroom feature joinery need to feel tailored to the way each room is used – from principal suites to smaller guest rooms.

·        Principal suites – Feature headboard walls that might include integrated bedsides, reading lights, zoning between sleeping and sitting areas, and a visual dialogue with dressing rooms and bathrooms.

·        Standard bedrooms – Simpler headboard arrangements that still resolve lighting, bedsides and storage in a calm, consistent way across multiple rooms.

·        Children’s and teen rooms – Robust headboards with integrated shelving, pinboards or small desks, designed to evolve as occupants grow.

·        Guest bedrooms – Considered but pared-back schemes where lighting, power and small storage touches make stays intuitive and comfortable.

These schemes almost always overlap with Wardrobes & Dressing Rooms, Fitted Storage & Alcove Units and, where studies or media sit within bedrooms, Home Offices & Study Joinery and Media Walls & TV Joinery.

Bedroom feature joinery in hospitality

In hotels, serviced apartments and members’ clubs, the headboard wall often carries a large portion of the design story – bringing together bed, bedsides, lighting, artwork and sometimes desks or banquettes in one elevation.

·        Hotel guestroom headboards – Headboard walls that integrate bedsides, reading lights, switches, power, minibars and sometimes small desks, designed to be intuitive for guests to use.

·        Suites and apartment-style rooms – More generous compositions that may zone sleeping from sitting and working, sometimes with partial screens, banquettes or daybeds linked into the headboard wall.

·        Members’ club bedrooms – Richer, more characterful headboards that borrow detailing from club rooms and bars, while still meeting the operational needs captured within broader guestroom scopes.

These elements typically sit within Hotel Guestroom Joinery as part of our wider Hospitality Joinery offer, and are coordinated closely with Wardrobes & Dressing Rooms and Media Walls & TV Joinery so that each room reads as a coherent whole.

Integrated storage, lighting and power

Most headboard walls carry more function than is immediately obvious – from power sockets and switches to storage for books, devices and personal items.

·        bedsides with drawers, open niches or a mix of both, sized for real objects – books, glasses, devices, carafes

·        integrated reading lights, ambient lighting and sometimes decorative fixtures, all coordinated with the wider lighting scheme

·        clever integration of sockets and charging points so that cables disappear into recesses rather than draping over surfaces

·        concealed storage within headboards or flanking units for extra pillows, blankets or guest amenities

We coordinate these elements with electrical and AV teams as part of our wider Bespoke Joinery process, so that servicing, access and maintenance are considered from the outset.

Materials, upholstery and tactility

Headboards are some of the most tactile elements in a bedroom. Materials and detailing need to feel inviting up close, while still reading cleanly from the door.

We build palettes from our Materials library – timbers, veneers, lacquers, stones, metals and upholstery – and align them with stylistic directions set out on Joinery Styles.

·        timber or lacquered surrounds that frame upholstered centres, giving a tailored, layered feel

·        full-height upholstered headboards for softer, more cocooning schemes, often paired with simpler flanking joinery

·        stone or timber ledges, plinths and shelves that offer robust surfaces for everyday use

·        careful selection of edges, corners and detailing so that everything feels good to lean against and touch

Where headboard walls run into wardrobes, desks or window seats, we make sure junctions between upholstery and joinery are drawn in detail and tested with samples.

Working with existing architecture

Bedrooms often come with quirks – off-centre windows, sloping ceilings, radiators, existing panelling. We treat these not as obstacles but as starting points for the composition.

·        aligning headboard elements with window heads, reveals and ceiling lines to make the room feel calmer

·        using panelling or full-height backdrops to visually recentre a bed where openings are asymmetrical

·        building headboards into existing Wall Panelling & Architectural Joinery or aligning them with Internal Doors & Screens so that they feel like part of the architecture, not an afterthought.

In period properties we are careful around original mouldings and details; in contemporary buildings we may use headboard walls to introduce rhythm and depth where the base fabric is more minimal.

Our process for headboards and bedroom feature joinery

Our approach to headboards and bedroom feature joinery follows the same clear stages as our wider

Bespoke Joinery work, with particular emphasis on comfort, lighting and how rooms are actually used day to day.

1. Brief & room review We begin by understanding who will use each room, how they sleep, read and relax, and what other functions – such as work or media – need to be supported.

2. Layout and elevation studies We review plans, sections and photos – or visit site – to agree bed positions, sightlines and how headboards relate to windows, doors and wardrobes.

3. Concept options We develop a small number of concepts for headboards and bedroom feature joinery, testing different combinations of materials, lighting and integrated storage.

4. Technical design & coordination We produce detailed drawings showing construction, fixings, lighting integration, services coordination and junctions with adjacent joinery.

5. Materials and samples We prepare focused sample sets for timbers, lacquers, stones, metals and upholstery, aligning them with wider bedroom schemes and adjacent scopes on Types of Joinery.

6. Production & installation Headboards and bedroom feature joinery are manufactured through our network of workshops and installed in coordination with the main contractor, with careful setting out to ensure beds, lighting and services land exactly where intended.

Connecting bedroom joinery into the wider scheme

Headboards rarely sit in isolation. They are one part of a wider bedroom and suite story, which might also include wardrobes, media, desks and seating.

We make sure decisions taken here are carried through to adjacent scopes such as Wardrobes & Dressing Rooms, Fitted Storage & Alcove Units, Media Walls & TV Joinery, Home Offices & Study Joinery and, in hospitality projects, Hotel Guestroom Joinery. All of this is coordinated within the structures laid out on Types of Joinery and the stylistic direction captured on Joinery Styles.
